Berlin – Zurich – Geneva – Montpellier – Barcelona – Madrid
The heat and height of summer travelers have begun.
I meet a number of South Americans, traveling by rail in Europe as the season turns to winter in the Southern Hemisphere. I meet two Canadian women backpacking for the summer. It’s refreshing to speak some uninterrupted English.
And I meet two Dutch men who are taking the Talgo to Barcelona also. We spend time in the train’s café car drinking cerveza. From Barcelona, they plan on hitch-hiking to Morocco. Sounds like quite a feat. Charles Manson may have killed that dream for me.
Train Tip: If arriving in either Barcelona Franca or Sants and needing to make a train connection to the other station, take the local Renfe trains. These trains make the connection between stations within 15 minutes, and are easier to navigate than the metro lines, and all of their stairs.

How many hours & price
Hello- This IS a long trip. I broke it up by stopping along the way, but it could be done in two days. It’s a good trip for the traveler who wants to see LOTS of places in Europe. Check deutschebahn.de for schedules. I used the Eurail Global Pass on this trip, so I paid only for some seat reservations, such as on the TGV in France, Talgo into Spain, and AVE in Spain. Have fun! Benjamin.
