In Menton, France

Menton is the furthest east you can go on the French Riviera: a small town of 30,000 whose reputation is growing because of it’s take on Carnival: the Citron Festival.

In 1929, a hotelier had the idea of promoting the citrus crop in what was then the number-one lemon growing region in Europe. The next year, the event moved to the street surrounding the Hotel Riviera, and has been expanding ever since.

Today, huge installations of lemons and oranges are showcased over three weeks, with local tradespeople selling a variety of citrus products.

WonderlampTrain Tip:
Beware taking the train out of Sitges in the morning hours after ‘Fat Tuesday’.
Menton is an easy 35 minute ride from Nice and makes for a nice day trip if not staying there. Ask at the station which trains will stop in Menton, as trains of differing destinations leaving multiple times each hour will make the stop. On my return trip, the timetable board said “Supprime” next to the train I planned to take. (Leading me to quickly seek a translator in the station.) This train had been canceled, but another would be passing through Nice within minutes.
