Budapest – Vienna – Villach – Venice Mestre – Florence

It’s spring, and green is in full bloom: First, along the wide open plains between Budapest and Vienna, then, on the train between Vienna and Villach, along the hills we pass through and the rivers we wind against.

Train Tip: The connection between Villach and Venice Mestre is not necessarily a train, as I learned on this trip. There are 4 trains that operate this route daily, and they are supplemented by OBB Austrian Postbuses that make the three hour trip a few times each day. You can check the details by putting your itinerary into an on-line website, such as deutschebahn.de. Or, look at the timetable leaflets on board, and know that ICB stands for “Inter City Bus.”
This bus is covered by the EuRail Pass. You only need to pay a seat reservation fee, on the bus. It is 7 Euros for a 2nd class seat reservation, and 9 Euros for a 1st class seat reservation. The bus feels a little cramped, reminding me why I like the train.

The bus stops directly at Venice’s Mestre station, and here I catch the train onto Florence. I meet a group of Italian girls, who have blindfolded one of their friends to whisk her away by train to a secret location (Rome) for her bachelorette party.
