Berlin – Hamburg – Copenhagen

The ride north of Hamburg into Denmark is beautiful: passing bays, wheat fields, cows and horses. This ICE train never achieves top speeds like other ICE trains, so it’s a leisurely journey through the countryside.

Train TipTrain Tip: I hopped on this ICE train from Hamburg to Copenhagen with no seat reservation, even though the Eurail Timetable book says a seat reservation is compulsory. And I easily found free seats, although this was a weekday, not a weekend when the train would probably be more crowded. Try your luck, or ask at the station. But there’s no sense paying the seat reservation fee if you don’t have to.

Reservations for the ICE trains are recommended (during peak times), but not compulsory for Eurail Pass holders!

If you don’t expect the trains to be crammed, there is indeed no need to make a reservation. Otherwise you pay around 4 euro to be assured of a seat, which can be pleasant during a longer route.
