Vienna to Salzburg

Travel date: Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I’m surprised at the number of people on the train. Most cabins are packed, and I’m hearing different dialects of German being spoken around me. One man explains that the reason this train is so packed is because it is one of the few that will go straight onto Munich after Salzburg.

The great thing about not understanding a language, I find, is that when I’m surrounded by it, I can tune it out. Not understanding the words, I instead focus on the melody of the pronunciation, and it becomes like background music. I slowly fall asleep.

WonderlampTrain Tip: If you are using a Pass and not reserving seats to hop on and off trains and your plans are somewhat flexible, consider a train’s origin points when choosing a train time. You have a better chance of finding an unreserved seat if the train starts and ends in smaller cities rather than larger ones. For example, this train was more crowded because it began in Vienna and concluded in Munich. There are other trains that go to Salzburg that don’t conclude in Munich that would be less crowded.
