Split to Budapest
I am making my plans to return to Zagreb on the same new “high-speed train.”
The station attendant tells me in Split that if I book my seat reservation to Zagreb at least a day in advance, then I will get a certificate for a free sandwich on the train. It’s not a sandwich that I would worry about having on this train, but perhaps a motion sickness remedy.
Those prone to motion-sickness take note: This small train jerks along at some slow speeds, and tilts at some higher speeds. I heard more than one passenger complain of feeling motion-sickness during this 6 hour train ride, and those were the ones whose English I could understand. I was fine, most people were, but if you are sensitive, you’ve been warned what to bring along on this adventurous train ride.
On the train from Zagreb back to Budapest, I meet Abigail, a German who is visiting family in Budapest this week. She has flown to Zagreb from Berlin, and is now catching a train to Budapest because she found the flights into Budapest to be too expensive. (Budapest has lost some low-cost airlines because of Hungary’s high-taxation.) I’ve met other Europeans who do the same – fly to a nearby city of their destination, and then train to their final destination. Europeans seem quite good as planning these itineraries.
Train Tip: Note that 3 trains daily depart Split to Zagreb, but only 2 of those have connections for trains to Budapest shortly after arriving in Zagreb. The trains leaving Split at 7:37 and 22:22 will arrive in Zagreb with a short wait time until the connecting train to Budapest, while the train that leaves Split at 10:30 will leave you in Zagreb for about 12 hours until the next connecting train north to Budapest.
Also in Zagreb, note that the Eurail Timetable Book says that the train from Zagreb to Budapest leaves at 15:56, when in fact the day that I was traveling, the train left Zagreb at 15:46.
