There’s one train stop in Naples, and to tell you the truth, I’m nervous. I’ve heard a lot of travelers talk about petty theft in Naples. My waiting time in the station is only an hour, but the time goes by quickly after I meet an Italian naval officer.
He is on leave for his summer holiday, waiting for his family to arrive by train. I review with him the Italian words I have learned, and he, like every other Italian on this trip, corrects me. I never see anything that concerns me regarding petty theft.
On board the train, I meet Graziano, an Italian soldier returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He expresses his desire to be back in Italy during these hot summer months, to be close to the sea. “It’s in our DNA to be by the sea in August,” he says to me.
Train Tip:The Venezia / Venice station has some quick eats, but if you have a little more time as I did, head down the street directly perpendicular to the main entrance of the station. After a five minute walk, you will find some (cheaper) cafes, and an internet café, if you need to pass more time.
