This is one of the most beautiful train rides I have been on yet. As the ICE train approaches Dresden, it snakes along the Elbe river, and all of the hillside cottages that dot the riverbanks.

Consider hopping off in one of the villages for a quick stroll if your train stops before Dresden. Most of the villages have cute restaurants and small shops. Or take a good look at the station markers as you pass by and choose one to make your way back to on the S1 local train once you arrive in Dresden.
I chose Kurort Rathen. It´s about a 40 minute train ride from Dresden. And you can take a quick ferry ride across the river and hike into the unique rock formation with a bridge known as Basteibrücke. Makes for a great day trip out into the country.

Train Tip: The S1 rail line from Dresden is covered by the Rail Pass. So consider making this day trip on the day you arrive or depart Dresden, and you will be saving a rail day on your pass. You can easily visit one of these villages in a few hours trip.
