Night train from Budapest to Zurich (2)

October 10, 2008 · Posted in Eurail

It was morning, and I surprisingly found myself waking in darkness, eye mask secured, window shade drawn. I had the couchette cabin to myself. I opened the shade. Daylight poured in.

I feared that I had slept through the Zurich stop, not hearing the train attendant wake me in the morning as they do.

I bolted out of the cabin to ask the attendant where we were, and he assured me in a way George Bailey assured those running into his bank: Yes, the bank is open, (sigh of relief) but no, you can’t have all of your money (Doh!) “No, you haven’t missed your stop in Zurich (sigh of relief), but the train is 3 hours behind schedule.” (Doh!)

The views are stunning as you pass mountains and lakes.
Luckily, there are frequent train connections from Zurich to Bern and then Bern to Interlaken. And because I am using a Eurail Pass and not point-to-point tickets, I can hop on the next train and not worry about having to exchange individual tickets.

WonderlampTrain Tip:
Ride these Swiss trains in daylight. The views are stunning as you pass mountains and lakes. I’m glad I wasn’t traveling in darkness during these legs of the trip.
