Nice to Bordeaux

October 20, 2008 · Posted in Eurail

After dinner with a friend in Nice, I board the overnight train to Bordeaux. There are couchettes, but since I napped quite a bit earlier in the day on the train, I decide to try a reclinable seat. It would allow me to sit up and read during the night. With the Eurail Pass, the overnight seat reservation on this train is 1.50 Euros.

As the night went on though, and I eventually became sleepy, my seat nearly fully reclined. I hadn’t seen these type of seats before.

I curled up in my sweatshirt, and apparently did such a good job of covering myself from light, that I didn’t realize when we had pulled into Bordeaux. I woke up to a train worker tapping me on the shoulder, waking to an empty train as I scrambled to unboard in fear that the train would soon be on its way to some other, unknown destination.

That sounds wonderful! I plan on doing the same thing with my Eurail pass, and I’ll be coming from Milan, then to Nice. Can I make my reservation online or at the station?

Hi Connie – It is probably easiest to go to the Milan train station as soon as you are able to and buy the overnight seat or bed reservation. Or you can buy it now from a different Italian train station, if you are not in Milan. Have fun! Benjamin.

I have a question…I only have 15 days to spend on holiday and would like to fly into Paris but also explore the countryside. Nice or Bordeaux? Anyone wish to throw out suggestions? If you had to pick one place which do you think it should be? Go to Bordeaux or Nice.

    Thank you.

    • Hello Kathleen — Hmm, what time of year will you go? There are good beaches surrounding Nice, but Bordeaux is closer and easier to travel to from Paris. But both are good cities. Have fun whichever you choose! Benjamin.
