In Samnaun

November 29, 2008 · Posted in Eurail

Eight years ago, this ski resort was looking for a new event to kick-start its winter season. Thus was born the Santa Claus World Championships, or Clau-Wau in local lingo.

The idea was to adapt the traditional December 5th St. Nicholas Day activities for children into something adults could celebrate. This year 17 teams from Europe competed in such events as Chimney Climbing and Donkey Trekking for the 3200 Euro prize money. And while these competitions take place during the day, the night belongs to what is like a Christmas-version of Octoberfest.

While all the merriment is fun, Samnaun is equally enjoyable in its quiet moments spent skiing and hiking into the snow-covered landscape.

On of my favorite moments was waking up on a Sunday morning and walking outside in newly fallen snow. I’d say “Morgen” to people in the village as I passed them on the street, each successive “Morgen” sounding more and more authentic. (At least, I think.)
