In Madrid
My friend is kind to take me around on his scooter to sample typical Madrid fare.
He later points me in the direction of the newly opened CaixaForum, an interesting building for arts and culture, hosting exhibitions and public forums.
The design of the building itself is worth seeing – a steel refurbishing of an old power plant next to a façade of green plants. (Location: Paseo Prado 36. Currently, until January 2009, there is an exhibit about the Etruscans, which is surprisingly detailed in English as well as Spanish.)
Caixa, one of Spain’s largest banks, constructed and operates the building, as it does in other Spanish cities. The bank’s hands-on design approach is admirable. I am not sure how much it costs Caixa each year, but I found this cultural space a refreshing use of a bank’s money, and commitment to community, rather than the millions we hear banks usually spend for naming rights to sports stadiums.
