In Helsinki

June 21, 2008 · Posted in Eurail, Finland, sightseeing

One of my favorite places I visited in Helsinki was Suomenlinna Island. It is a short 10 minute ferry ride from Helsinki´s Market Square.

Some 800 Finns live on this island, which in itself makes for a unique stroll through town. But on the far end of the island is one of the world´s oldest, largest and best-preserved maritime fortresses. Dating back to the middle of the eighteenth century, the fortress was built to defend Finnland (which was then part of Sweden) from the Russians.
