Christmas in Hamburg
Hamburg has several Christmas markets, but two are particularly interesting. The market in front of the Rathaus public building is managed by a circus company. It’s a beautiful market that features a Viennese-style café and an antique merry-go-round. But what makes this market truly special is what takes flight each day at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm: Santa and his sleigh of reindeer.


At an entirely different type of market, other things are taking flight. St. Pauli is Hamburg’s red light district, and they too get into the holiday spirit. They call their market “Hamburg’s Geilster Weihnachtsmarkt,” or Hamburg’s Sexiest/Craziest Christmas Market. There’s an adult only area with special gift stalls and strip shows. Hamburg’s waterfront renovation is one of the most interesting city re-design projects I have seen, and the largest re-development project in Europe. The plan is to build almost an entirely separate city along the waterfront, with apartments, schools and public facilities. They can afford to, as after seeing these city plans, you quickly understand that Hamburg has been one of the wealthiest cities in Germany.
