In Bayonne

October 22, 2008 · Posted in Eurail

Since my trip to San Sebastian in the summer, I have grown interested in this region known as Basque country. And not just because of the pintxos. Now I would be visiting the French side of Basque country, which strives for political autonomy, sometimes violently so.

There’s a Basque museum in the historic center of Bayonne (37, quai des Corsaires). Although not a huge museum, it is the largest ethnographic museum of the Basque country, with arts and artifacts particular to this region. Of interest are old film clips showing the country side as it was once lived. And there’s a room dedicated to the unique Basque sport of pilota, a game I had never heard of before (see Wikipedia).

My friend drove us along the coast, which must be stunning when summer temperatures allow swimming. In neighboring Biarritz, you can visit La Cote des Basques, the beach where Americans introduced surfing to Europe in the 1950s. It is still considered the surfing spot in Europe. Even on the wet day I was there, plenty of surfers were on their boards.
