Paestum is a half-hour train ride south of Salerno. A ten minute walk from the train station, you’ll find some of the most monumental ruins outside of Greece and Rome.

The temples of Athena and Neptune actually date back to a time when the Greeks controled this region. A small museum, the Archaeological Museum of Paestum, chronicles the treasures found during digs here.
A further 30 minute walk, or quick bus ride, brings you to the sea. It was busy the day I was there, mostly with Italians enjoying their long summer holiday, swimming in the sea and lounging at the outdoor cafes.
